On Sunday I drove out to the Paint Mines for a hike and some photos. I arrived just after dawn, and saw a small herd of pronghorn, an enormous coyote (not in the same place), and a whole bunch of cold-sluggish wasps.
The clays of the Paint Mines were gathered by native peoples for thousands of years for use in pottery and as paints. The beautiful colored layers are caused by oxidized iron compounds and selenite. The Dawson Formation sandstone has been weathered by wind and water to produce the badlands and formations visible today.
